Even though theatre is often viewed as a form of entertainment, many immigrants who came into the United States viewed it as a way to express themselves. They came to this country and struggled to make it day by day. Theatre was a way to forget about their problems for at least a little while and it was also a way for them to feel a little bit at home. Ethic theatres would incorporate details from the countries that immigrants came from. I think one of the strongest quotes from the reading is: “ I do not go to the theatre to think, but to forget….I seek there to forget my wife, the children, the crowded, tenement, the littered wash, the bad ventilation….I want to be the men dressed in armor” This shows how stressed and how vulnerable the provider of a family felt. They hit breaking point and one of there outlets was to go and watch a play and find hope and motivation somehow in the midst of watching the cast perform. Theatre accommodated a range of audiences: women, Hispanics, Blacks, Asians, Indians, etc. Personally, I feel like ethnic theatre brought everyone from all different backgrounds together and united them regardless of their differences.
